Electrical Panel Upgrades in Utah
Most homes in northern Utah were wired for a different era — 60- to 100-amp service, glass-fuse panels, or first-generation breaker boxes that can no longer keep up with EV chargers, induction ranges, heat pumps, and home offices. A panel upgrade replaces the heart of your home’s electrical system. Done right, it gives you decades of safe, code-compliant capacity. Done wrong, it’s a fire risk and a failed inspection.
How to tell your panel needs upgrading
Common signals: breakers that trip more than a few times a year, warm or discolored panel covers, lights that dim when large appliances cycle, a panel manufactured by Federal Pacific or Zinsco (both recalled and uninsurable), or any panel rated under 100 amps. If you are adding an EV charger, hot tub, ADU, or running a home business with shop equipment, you almost certainly need to upgrade.
What a Utah panel upgrade actually involves
A full upgrade is more than swapping a breaker box. It typically includes coordinating a service-disconnect with the utility (Rocky Mountain Power in most of our area), replacing the meter base, mast, service-entrance conductors, grounding electrode system, and the main panel itself. Inspections from the city or county AHJ are required at rough-in and final.
Amperage: 100, 200, or 400 amp?
200-amp service has become the new minimum for new construction in Weber and Davis counties — it gives you headroom for EV charging, electrification, and additional circuits without re-pulling service later. 400-amp service is common on large custom homes, shops, or properties planning solar with battery backup. We will size correctly based on your actual load calculation, not a guess.
Why TriTech
We are a licensed Utah electrical contractor. We pull permits in our name (no homeowner permits), coordinate the utility cut/reconnect, and our work is inspected and warrantied. We also handle the data and renewable-energy layers in-house, so if your panel upgrade is the first step in adding solar, a battery, or a structured-cabling refresh, you only deal with one accountable team.
