Smart Home Pre-Wire
The single highest-leverage thing you can do during new construction or a major remodel is over-wire the rough-in. Every drop you skip now will cost 5-10x to retrofit later. Here is the checklist we use on smart-home pre-wires.
Data drops everywhere there is a screen or a device
Every TV location: 2x Cat6 + 1x coax. Every desk: 2x Cat6. Every WiFi AP location: 1x Cat6 (ceiling-mount preferred). Every camera location: 1x Cat6. Smart panel/server closet: home-runs from every drop terminated to a 24-port patch panel.
WiFi AP placement
Plan for one AP per 1,500-2,000 sq ft on the main floor, plus one per upstairs floor. Ceiling-mounted in central locations beats wall-mounted in corners every time. We mark AP locations on the framing plan before drywall.
Speaker pre-wire
In-ceiling speakers in primary living spaces, primary bedroom, patio, garage shop. Pre-pull speaker wire to a central rack location even if you are not buying an amp yet — adding the amp later is trivial; pulling wire isn’t.
Conduit for the unknowns
Pull a 1.5″ or 2″ conduit from your low-voltage closet to the attic and from the attic to the roof. You will thank yourself when you add solar, a new camera location, or new fiber later.
