Should I Replace My Roof Before Installing Solar?

When to re-roof before solar, when to install over an existing roof, and what to expect for removal/reinstall costs.

Should I replace my roof before solar?

If your roof has more than 10-12 years of life left and is in good shape, install solar over it. If it has 5-8 years left, replace first — removing and reinstalling an array later costs more than re-roofing now. Tile and slate roofs need specialized mounting and are best done at re-roof time. Asphalt shingle is the simplest substrate and what most Northern Utah homes have.
