How Many WiFi Access Points Does My House Need?

Sizing WiFi AP coverage for a Utah home — typical rule of thumb, ceiling placement, and PoE wiring.

How many WiFi APs do I need?

A reasonable rule is one ceiling-mounted PoE AP per 1,500-2,000 sq ft of main living space, plus one per upstairs floor and a dedicated AP for any detached structure (garage, ADU, outdoor). Mesh extenders work but lose throughput at every hop; wired-backhaul APs (Ubiquiti, Ruckus, Aruba) are dramatically more reliable. We pre-wire AP locations during structured cabling work even if you are not installing APs immediately.
